Pure Barre: What's the Big Deal?

Breakfast at Target

Y'all know I’ve always had a pretty active lifestyle. But in recent months I had been in a real fitness rut. My runs were becoming exhausting, almost painful; I wasn't taking nor teaching fitness classes because of my new job transition; and frankly I wasn't motivated or excited about being active as I had been. When my friend, Becky, invited me to try the latest fitness venture in town, Pure Barre, I hesitated... but knew I desperately needed something to get me back on track.

I did a little research but wasn't sure what to expect; with a name like "Pure Barre," I envisioned ballet buns and leg warmers and raspy-voiced instructors barking at us to do pirouettes across the floor to Tchaikovsky. There clearly couldn't be a place for an uncoordinated six-foot gal with her cursed wide-set Polish hips and boat-sized feet. But Becky insisted... and I begrudgingly dragged my big hips and feet to the studio (with my bride-to-be friend, Leigh, also begrudgingly being dragged in tow).

It was Halloween the night of my first class, and you'd think Pure Barre was the scariest haunted house of them all. The studio had barely been open a week, and there sat a room full of about 25 ladies all appropriately scared out of their wits. Nobody but maybe a select few who had done a class prior knew what was about to happen. Looking around, however, I was hardly the only one who wasn't a "dancer" type. We ranged in ages, sizes, builds, and fitness capacities - some regular fitness buffs, some who had never taken a fitness class before. (EVER.)  Those who were elegant and graceful, and those of us who look like we perpetually need a sobriety test. The music started, and the co-owner/instructor, Addie, enthusiastically entered the class. My anxieties began welling up, but I didn't even have time to let them kick in. And by the end of class, I was a shaky, sweaty, wide-eyed mess... and OH, how I absolutely could not wait until my next class.

>> THE CLASS <<

Pure Barre review
Don't worry, the studio provides everything... except the socks, which you can buy at the studio!

A typical Pure Barre class moves really quickly. It’s a truly full-body workout, combing elements from yoga, Pilates, ballet barre work, and Pure Barre’s signature moves (which, I will totally admit, are super awkward the first few times you try them). Spending 5-8 minutes per muscle group, you're challenged to push yourself to complete muscle fatigue, much like BodyPump and other strength training classes. HOWEVER, the big difference I noticed is the isolation and focus on targeted areas, with a very strong connection to the female physique** (aka, the "trouble areas" many women agonize over), such as:
:: the upper arms, shoulder, and "tank top" areas
:: the tush and back of the legs
:: the deep, lower abs
:: the hips and "muffin top"
:: and my most loathed zone, the thighs.
While all your muscle groups are working together, it’s a different feel and mindset than most classes I’ve taken.

And it’s not frilly.
There’s no Tchaikovsky. (But Black Eyed Peas? You bet.
The instructors are as nice and encouraging as can be.
The class is as hard as you make it, and I promise you - the second you start to get bored, they shake things up.
Dance experience is in no way required.
In fact, you don't even have to like dance.

>> THE RESULTS  <<

You’ll feel it the first class. I noticed a pretty big improvement by the end of week two, and by the end of my first month I felt lighter, tighter, and longer (and my husband noticed it even before I did). My runs have improved, my joints aren't nearly as stiff as they used to be, and I've gained some serious flexibility (I'll stay mum on whether or not my husband noticed that, too).

I approached Addie & Anna about the idea of doing a post, and they were incredibly gracious to let me snap some photos and answer some questions. Not only did I discover they were from my hometown, but that they put a lot on the line to follow their new passion - something I wholly admire. Below is their take on the experience and why, particularly, they hope to make an impact here in the Capital City.

>> THE STUDIO <<

Breakfast at Target

Why did you choose Columbia, SC, to open a new Pure Barre studio?
:: We both have roots in the Columbia area so opening a business here was ideal. The city is growing more and more progressive and has an abundance of outdoor resources for those seeking healthy, active lifestyles. However, there is nothing like Pure Barre here. We fell in love the with the technique because it is an intelligent exercise that produces fast results. While there are over 100+ locations nationwide, Pure Barre feels like a small, tight knit community of women. We are so excited to include the Columbia women of all ages in the Pure Barre lifestyle.
Breakfast at Target
What was your "ah-ha" moment in deciding to open a PB studio?
:: We feel that the opportunity for us to open a PB Studio was a Godsend. We were both looking for a career we were passionate about so we jumped at the chance to franchise Pure Barre here in Five Points. Growing up cheering and dancing competitively, this was our second chance to do what we love. After experiencing the passion and energy of the people involved in Pure Barre, we knew it was something we wanted to be a part of.

Any advice for beginners?
:: Pure Barre is intense but anyone who can hold on to a ballet barre can do it. The workout utilizes the ballet barre & small isometric movements to lift and shape a woman’s backside, taper in her hips, flatten her abs, tone everything and burn fat. It gets everything you need done in 55 minutes, is set to great music and is actually a lot of fun!

What is your favorite thing about the class?
:: Thighs. We work for the "shake" in class, every time. Shaking is a good thing; it means your muscles are changing!

How do you think Pure Barre will impact the Columbia community?
:: The reason PB has such a following is because it really works and it works fast. We’ve watched the technique shrink & lift women in a matter of weeks! At this time there are over 100,000 women doing Pure Barre! To see results you should do PB at least 3-4 times per week.  However, the workout is designed so you could do it every day and the more you do it the more effective it will be. We are the first barre studio in Columbia and it is a totally different take on exercise. You don't have to beat your joints up to get a good workout. You can be drenched in sweat without both feet ever leaving the carpet.

>> OVERALL <<
The experience has been great. The chance to try something new, meet new people, and feel new change in my physical appearance and health has been a welcome one. I definitely see myself sticking with it into the New Year, and I’m incredibly excited to see how Pure Barre grows here in Columbia.

>> WAIT, WAIT - THERE'S MORE! <<

And for those of you in the Columbia, SC area interested in trying it, PB Columbia hosting a PURE RESOLUTION deal to kick off the new year with 2 months at a discounted price.
OH, you know you want to be my workout buddy. I think Becky & Leigh are getting bored with me anyways.

  1. I thought about trying our PB when I heard one opened in town but man alive is it expensive! Looks like a fun experience though.

    1. Hi April!

Listen: I'm a couponing, thrifting, DIY-ing old lady and the price WAS something I had to consider long and hard. But check it out... I've found PB to be more than an experience. The results speak for themselves, and THAT'S what you're paying for. Plus, I'm held more accountable because I HAVE invested a lot... I want to get as much out of it as I can! I definitely had to move some finances around to make it fit in my budget, but hey - it's making fitness a priority, and I feel like the membership cost now will save me in medical bills (or cosmetic surgery payments, ha!) later!!

Thank you for visiting, glad I could reconnect again with your blog!

    2. Hi April! I agree with you, Pure Barre is expensive. It's one of the reasons I chose to take a break from "shaking" every other day. HOWEVER, as a result of the new year, many of the studios are offering special discounts. If your budget allows, I encourage you to take advantage of these specials. Often, if it's your first time you can get a discount, too. It's a completely different kind of workout that really tones those areas of a woman's body that are very difficult to tone and tighten. Best of luck to you if and when you give Pure Barre a try!

    3. Thanks! I'll probably definitely try it at least once! :)

  2. Sounds awesome, I really must try it! The only bad thing is every time PB came up all I could think of was peanut butter....

    1. Hahaha! Well, they're both fitness-y related things, so makes sense to me! If you ever come up to Columbia and want to give it a try, I'd love to be your PB buddy... and maybe we can find a peanut butter something to indulge in afterwards. ;) Happy New Year to you, Mandy!!

    1. Mary, I have watched you conquer things I could only DREAM of doing... if being clumsy is the worst of it, I'd say you're in pretty good shape. (<< Look at that! A PUN!!!) But seriously, it's been a great addition to my routine!

But the grace thing... feel ya' on that. Though I have the 'awkward' thing pretty down-pat. I have no doubt I'm providing added entertainment for fellow Pure Barre participants.

  4. Sounds like such a cool place! As a ballerina though I think it might be weird doing something different at the barre!

    1. Hi Melissa! Well, maaaybe, but I'm sure it would only enhance your dance! (We like to make things rhyme here at Breakfast at Target, apparently.) Seriously, if you're craving a shake-up, I bet this would be a fun "out of the box" experience for you. Have at it, ma'am!

  5. Great post! I am one of the cheapest women alive.....but PB is worth.every.penny!!!! I've been doing it for a couple months after not exercising for years, and it's already made a huge difference mentally and physically. The mental focus it requires is comparable to yoga and mental clarity and release is worth the 225 a month alone. Already I'm starting to not recognize my body....in a good way. I go 6 times a week (6 AM classes) and it is the best 55 minutes of my day. Cheaper and more effective than a therapist or meds and more effective than any other class or personal training I've ever done. We've had to shift around our budget and do without a few things, but it's been MORE than worth it!

    1. I wish you weren't anonymous - you hit the nail on the head! Those "free" workout plans you can find on Pinterest or other websites are okay, but I find the money I'm paying towards classes has kept me accountable - plus the instructors push you WAY harder than you can push yourself. Plus, I'm more motivated when there are others around watching me, haha!

And WOW, 6x's a week? Get it, girl!

  6. I have been doing pure barre for about 3 1/2 years now. It is pricey but it is worth it. My husband explained it to me like this... if at the end of your life the doctor said, for 2500.00 (or however much a year of pb costs you) I will give you one more year to live. Wouldn't it be worth it? Pure barre is the one thing that gets my butt off the couch and working out. And it is so effective. Just give it a try!

    1. Yep! And think of all the things we spend money on we don't REALLY need to... I've limited the number of times I get coffee or lunch at work and no more "browsing" through Target or other shops after work (a guilty pleasure!) or when I'm doing necessary shopping. If it actually works, then that's money well spent, right?? Thanks for joining in on the conversation!!!

  7. LOVED READING THIS. First of all, your blog is presh. Second, I'm a PB instructor/fellow blogger and it makes me so happy to hear how much people enjoy the work out, especially when they start out as sceptics. Keep up the good work!

    1. Thank you, Rivers! I'm not only loving the workout but the Pure Barre community - I love meeting new people and connecting with fellow PB junkies. :) Just checked out your blog and YOU, my friend, have a delightful blog yourself. Please stop by the Columbia studio if for - whatever reason - you make it this way!

  8. I am also a tall, wide-hipped, amazon queen. I've done pure barre here in Salt Lake and I LOVE it. My hardest obstacle is class is when doing abs under the barre. Any hints or tips that make it feel less awkward for you?

    Replies
    1. Haha!! I'm constantly surrounded by petite women (not a bad thing), but glad to hear there are fellow tall folks! ;) I've had the same issue, too... to be honest, as cheesy as it sounds, I've had to really focus and engage the "mind-body" mindset during that class big push of class. I close my eyes and concentrate as hard as I can on stretching my legs and feeling the deep abdominals. And frankly, it's still awkward, but that's pretty much how I roll through life as it is...

... PS. Saw your photos on your most recent post. Look at YOU, hot stuff!

  9. I teach a leg strengthening class at my gym and frequently do barre type exercises. I love it. I honestly wish we had a barre studio near me. So I'm jealous. Super jealous.

    1. Hi Cassie! Sheesh, I just noticed this comment - c'mon, Blogger!

Maybe you can look into their at-home DVD series? I have a feeling when my schedule gets crazy during the fall semester, I may need to take a step back from the barre (literally and physically!), so I've considered getting them as a back up should that be the case... but stay positive, they're getting more and more popular. There might be one on it's way to you soon enough! (I mean, if the middle of SC can get one...)

  10. Oh my, I just found your blog and i'm in LOVE with it! I have been reading older posts all evening :) I actually found it by googling pure barre reviews and voila! I had my first class today, and I LOVE LOVE LOVED it! I got the newbie 1 month unlimited deal here in Columbus, Ohio.

How often are you going now?

I am trying to learn the ins-and-outs of blogging now... I'm preg with my first baby (due in July). So, I am also looking into a "big girl camera" and look forward to reading about your photography.

    Have a great night!

    1. Hi Jacquelyn,

Ooooh! Congrats on the new baby... I hear PB is a GREAT workout for pregnant ladies! I go at least 3x's a week, but there are several weeks I've gone 4-6x's... depends on my work schedule (I travel a bunch). I promise you'll feel results in the first couple of weeks and SEE results by the end of the first month (even with your growing belly!).

And I've been meaning to share more about photography... hmmmm, might need to get on a blog post soon. :D

Thanks for the follow, and welcome to the B@T crew! :)

  11. This is great! We recently got a studio here in Greenville (and now they're opening a second one!) I danced for 15 years of my early life prior to and into college, but have since long lost my dancer's body, muscles AND flexibility (as most of us who give it up do, unfortunately!) I've found it hard to find any type of class that worked all of those muscles like a traditional Ballet class did. So I was both thrilled and terrified when I found Pure Barre! haha But you're right, there are all types in there and it is SO FREAKING ADDICTIVE! I wish it weren't as expensive, but I just keep on going back anyway! :)

  12. Awesome! I just posted on PB as well as I just had my 2yr anniversary of doing it. It's the best workout and I've never been bored with it. (Of course maybe - just maybe - part of that is because I'm usually the only guy in class.) Here's my post on it - http://foodandwinehedonist.com/2013/05/02/pure-barre-rocks/

btw - I used to go to Columbia for work a lot. Love that town!
